The war on [insert favourite topic here]

The very phrase: ‘the war on [insert favourite topic here]’ is almost always about reducing personal freedom and increasing repression and intolerance in one form or another.

std-img_0683-bcIntolerance breeds hostility and leads only to war and terrorism, whether via Prohibition or Al-Qaida or Communism or Witchcraft. This is why true tolerance is so important for modern civilization to learn.

As John Lennon said: “The main hangup in the world today is hypocrisy and insecurity. If people can’t face up to the fact of other people being naked or smoking pot, or whatever they want to do, then we’re never going to get anywhere.” Lennon was speaking in 1969, have we moved on?

Extreme prudery in the USA

As an extreme example of the prudery in the USA, there is the Janet Jackson incident. At the Super Bowl halftime show on 1st February 2004, her right breast was briefly seen on TV. The US public and press went to town and gave an excellent demonstration of their dreadful prudery.

Jackson had an invitation to perform at the 2004 Grammy Awards cancelled and a lawsuit was filed by one Terri Carlin “on behalf of all American citizens who watched the outrageous conduct.”. The lawsuit wopx-cover-front-facebook-safeas dropped but the incident also triggered other legal action.

This action resulted in fines for companies involved with the broadcast. Even the law was changed, the Federal Communications Commission is now able to fine up to $500,000 per violation instead of the original maximum of $27,500. Europeans reported this and took the opportunity to laugh at America’s expense.

A typical report said “How reassuring to the rest of the world that the U.S. has its priorities straight. We, the poorly informed old Europeans, wouldn’t have realised that Jackson’s breast was a more important issue than Iraq’s missing weapons of mass destruction. But the U.S. media is covering the breast-baring incident like the story of the century.” Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Messages with poems

Every day, morning and night, he sent me messages with poems, with declarations of love, which I thought at the beginning as unrealistic, since we didn’t know each other personally and we should get to know each other in person before we can speak of love.Cover-frontBut his messages were so beautiful and he had started calling me “Honey”, as I now was his true love, and I was looking forward more and more every day to his messages. On Nov. 06, I set up a Skype account so we could chat directly. On that day he told me he wanted to live with me, his daughter Petra and my son together in Munich.

I should buy a house for this. I refused to buy a house, since I didn’t had the money. He told me that he could send me some money and I should look for a 4-bedroom-house. I told him, we could do this together after his arrival here. And that evening I told him that I love him, what has made him probably very happy (haha). At that time I was already very much in love with him and so worried that nothing would happen to him in this terrible country. I couldn’t eat anymore, could only think about him the whole time and I was only waiting for my chats with him on Skype.

Even dancing, my hobby wasn’t fun for me anymore, as I could only think of him. Of course, we still exchanged mails every day. He always sent me wonderful love poems that would easily win the heart of every woman.

"Time for me to die…"

“Time for me to die,” Angela responded with a smile. Nathalie kissed her forehead and placed the mask over her face. Nathalie and Ian both took one of Angela’s hands in theirs as Nathalie began a short countdown.

“I’m dropping you in five…four…three…two…one…” Nathalie hit the button to release the board and as it slid into the vat she felt a sickening twist in her stomach at Angela’s scream of pain as the freezing water consumed her. She looked at Ian who had himself turned pale, shaking and sweating with the same fear as she was. She grabbed his hand and held it tightly, fighting to control her stomach and even her bladder as the screams of pain from Angela slowly began to subside.

Angela’s eyes snapped open the moment she felt awake again. Immediately she felt a sensation resembling bliss, of floating freely in utter peace, but it quickly turned to a pang of elation when she realised she was enshrouded by a familiar haze, and that they had been successful. But the elation quickly gave way to a sense of urgency about her planned experiments and she leapt to her feet and looked around her. It was just like the last time, with people emerging from the haze to be greeted by pairs of angels in white robes. Her two angels approached her, smiling the same bland smile worn by all the angels.

“Hello Angela,” the first one said. Angela ignored him, she was already focusing on the experiments they had discussed. She reached down to her arm to pinch it, but before she could do that she realised something unexpected.
“Oh, I’m naked,” she said. The angels thought she was talking to them.

Core beliefs

Western religions do not generally have direct prohibition of social nudity as a core belief, such prohibition as there is has come about from custom and practice and from misunderstood interpretations of early teachings. Protestations against nudity have been made by a few of the religious hierarchy and sadly followed by the many.

opx-cover-front-facebook-safeThere is often a huge difference in the core beliefs of a religion and what is taught by those who feel they should teach it. It is quite easy to find a given religious text and then to find a range of mutually opposing interpretations of that same text. A good example is the use of the word “shame” in the Christian story of Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Some Christian teachers will take it to mean that nakedness is shameful, others will take it to mean that nakedness is good; the position taken by the Christian naturist movement. How could a God have made something shameful?

Would you dare suggest that the handiwork of your God is so flawed it must be covered all the time? Did He make such a serious mistake? Who are you to tell your God that He made mistakes in His creation? To me, the good or bad about nudity is what is in your heart, your intentions, the reasons you go naked, not the nudity itself.

Cycling will lead to immorality

The bicycle, besides being one of the most environmentally friendly and healthy forms of personal transport, may also lay claim to having done much for the civil rights of women. In the late 1800s, when cycling became fashionable for middle-class European women of the period, it caused an outrage.

Even when women were able to wear a pair of trousers they were dubbed “a cycling dress consisting of a jacket and trousers, the latter being covered with a skirt for the sake of modesty, and to protect the wearer from verbal (and sometimes physical) attacks.” std-wnbr_178-bcIn 1860 a Mrs Linton feared that cycling for ladies would “lead to immorality as girls roamed the countryside in search of adventures.” It was not only women such as Mrs Linton that these adventurous women needed to fear; the establishment was also heartily against the idea of trousers being worn by ladies, as even the medical journal The Lancet declared: “[we] consider this article of dress unnecessary, and in many ways detrimental to health and morals.”

And “that monstrosity of fashion, the divided skirt, is an outrage not to be countenanced.” It might be entertaining to consider what these people would have made of the WNBR. One can only imagine apoplectic fits with bulging eyes, red cheeks and much gesticulation. “It was thought that the combination of straddling the saddle with the pedaling motion would lead to arousal in the female, leading to the habit of masturbation.” Some authorities suggested the logical conclusion would be to render men irrelevant; a grave matter indeed. Although perhaps this was merely a portent of a strange mixture of ideas combining militant feminism and short-sighted genetic experimental ideas in the 21st century.

A hundred years ago Alice Hawkins, a suffragette, cycled around Leicester, in the UK, promoting the womens rights movement, causing outrage by being one of the first ladies to wear pantaloons in the city. It’s worth considering, for a moment, the kind of response an event like the WNBR might have received at that time.

Oh, you haven't kept your underwear on

Two things immediately took Nathalie by surprise. Firstly, that Angela was so muscular. Secondly, she was now completely naked.
“Oh, you haven’t kept your underwear on,” Nathalie said, somewhat taken aback by her openness.
“Why would I?” replied Angela as she sat down on the examination table. “This is a medical examination after all.”
9780957243293“Yes, yes, of course” stuttered Nathalie in response.
“What would you like me to do?” asked Angela, who seemed unaware of Nathalie’s surprise at her nakedness.
“Lie down,” she said, “and we can get started.” As Angela lay down, Nathalie was pretty sure she’d pass any test she gave her. She had a flawless physique, with especially large and well developed abdominal muscles. Her arms were strong, with prominent biceps and her legs were as strong as any woman’s she had ever seen.
Nathalie ran through the basic tests, and Angela passed each one perfectly. Her pulse, blood pressure, breathing and everything else were all those of a very fit and healthy adult. Nathalie could not find a single flaw in her health, even the heart monitor she attached to Angela produced a perfect result.
“Well, your results are perfect so far,” announced Nathalie, “and all we have now is the stress test.” Nathalie gestured at the treadmill in the corner. “Do you need anything?” Nathalie asked, thinking of clothes.
“No, that’s okay, I can do this in my bare feet,” was Angela’s unperturbed reply as she strode naked over to the treadmill and switched it on.
Her energy was boundless. Nathalie kept increasing the speed on the treadmill and Angela kept matching whatever speed she was given. Sweat poured off her, but she didn’t stop, she didn’t even slow down. Her heart coped with it perfectly, never missing a beat and taking all the stress Nathalie threw at it.
After an hour of the punishing regime, Nathalie had seen enough.

The bastard's got away with it!

“What is it you said you do?” Nathalie asked.
“I’m in marketing,” she replied, “I’ve been running my own company for almost ten years now. Another ten years at it and I can probably retire, maybe even before I hit fifty.”

9780957243293As the two of them walked into the house, Angela stopped to pull a newspaper from her mailbox. She glanced at it and continued to read it as she entered her house. Nathalie, following behind her, heard Angela emit what she assumed were some German profanities as she read the newspaper.

The bastard’s got away with it!

“Something wrong?” asked Nathalie.
“The bastard’s killed himself, he’s got away with it.” was the venomous reply.
“Who?”
“This priest,” she replied, pointing at the photo underneath a headline, “he’s thought to be the most prolific child abuser in German history. Looks like he had thousands of victims, and at least a couple of dozen of them killed themselves. He was finally jailed a few months ago, but now he’s dead. And you know what that means don’t you?” Nathalie looked at her with a puzzled expression and shook her head. “He was a priest,” continued Angela, “he’ll get to Heaven. Can we be so sure those kids did?”
